Dr. Amy Selkirk’s academic and professional pursuits are fueled by her passion for teaching, interest in oboe pedagogy, and love of performing. Selkirk resides in Mobile, AL, where she maintains an active career as a freelance performer and teacher. She is currently the Adjunct Instructor of Oboe at the University of South Alabama, where she teaches applied oboe lessons, woodwind methods, music appreciation classes, and coaches woodwind chamber music; and the Adjunct Instructor of Oboe at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS, where she teaches applied oboe lessons. She is also the oboe coach for the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra. Previously, she has served on the faculties at Ocean County College in Toms River, NJ, and at the Florida State University Summer Music Camps. 

Selkirk also teaches private oboe lessons to several middle school and high school students throughout Alabama and Mississippi. Students of Dr. Selkirk have successfully auditioned for All-State and District Honor Bands. They have also been selected as finalists and winners in several notable solo competitions, including the Alabama Bandmasters Association All-State Solo Festival, and the Mobile Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition.

In addition to her teaching endeavors, Selkirk also enjoys a prolific career as a performing musician on the Gulf Coast. She currently holds the positions of principal oboe with the Meridian (MS) Symphony Orchestra, and principal oboe with the Panama City Symphony. Selkirk also frequently performs with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra, Mobile Opera, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Gulf Coast, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony. Additionally, Selkirk is very passionate about performing solo and chamber repertoire. She has recently performed at conferences of the International Double Reed Society and the North American Saxophone Alliance, and has given multiple faculty recitals at the University of South Alabama.

As a skilled pianist, Selkirk also enjoys accompanying her oboe students on their solo repertoire. She is currently the piano instructor at Riff Music Studio in Daphne, AL, where she teaches beginning piano lessons to several young students.

Selkirk was awarded the Doctor of Music degree in Woodwind Performance from Florida State University in May of 2019. She has a Master of Music degree in Oboe Performance from Kent State University and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. While studying at Fredonia she was awarded the coveted Performer’s Certificate. She is also a certified Music Educator in New York State. Selkirk’s primary oboe teachers have included Eric Ohlsson, Danna Sundet, Sarah Hamilton, Mark Dubois, and Karen Hosmer.
